Control panels face an interesting future, with the new Euro standards sure to have an impact in this product area for both manufacturers and installers. Here are some of the more recent releases...

More power to you

A new product designed to dramatically expand the capabilities of Visonic's PowerMax Plus wireless alarm system has been launched.

PowerMax Plus 6 extends the current system by meeting new police specifications, complying with EN50131-1, DD243 and BS 6799 requirements.

"This upgraded product significantly increases the effectiveness of the PowerMax systems , as it now gives industry-leading detection with early alerts of smoke, flood, gas and intruders," Visonic says. "The sophisticated technology also uses narrowband, which improves all-round performance, making the system even more reliable and better than ever."

PowerMax Plus 6 also has the option of full GSM mobile phone technology backups.

Visonic's Powermax Plus is an advanced home security and management system, enabling surveillance and automation to be controlled from one compact system.

The system uses miniature cameras throughout the home, enabling residents to discretely view what is occurring. These images can be accessed remotely – for monitoring children arriving home from school, verifying deliveries etc.

Homeowners can also verify the status of lighting devices, reprogram security functions, and control home appliances through the system's home automation functions.

The system supports camera connectivity for real-time viewing, as well as advanced modules for GSM full backup connection, internet access, wireless external siren, etc. The remote aspects can be accessed via landline or mobile telephones, as well as online.

Detectors supported include PIR and pet-immune motion detectors, glass break, flood, smoke and gas detectors, and door/window magnetic contacts. Event reporting is available to monitoring stations, pagers, SMS messages, email, web applications, mobile phones, and landlines.

Making life simpler

The Avanti XP from MDT is an upload/download control panel which the manufacturer says costs the same as a bells-only panel.

"Can the domestic and light commercial installation sector justify the expense of an upload/download panel?" MDT asks.

"At the end of the day, domestic and light commercial jobs are relatively quick to install, so why bother with upload/download when it will only complicate matters?"

The company believes that the Avanti XP, which costs the same as a 'bells-only' panel, is the answer to these questions.

"With integrated communicator and modem and lightning speed PC software, this control panel fully satisfies the needs of domestic and light commercial installations," MDT says. "The 'Dialog' icon-based PC software is exceptional in its ease and speed of use, while not compromising on features.

"If your customer wants to change an access code at 7:30pm, wouldn't it be much easier to do it at your PC? Life becomes so much simpler when you have upload/download."

Speedy installation

Honeywell has introduced the new Galaxy 2 series EN compliant control panel range.

The company says it is "perfect for all PD6662/EN50131-1:2004 security grade 2 installations".

"It is a fully hybrid control panel range, providing up to 44 zones, with PSTN/GSM dual path signalling and two-way voice options. Incorporating self-diagnostics, supported by an effective PC application, the Galaxy 2 series of control panels continues the Galaxy philosophy of easy to use, installer friendly, maintainable intruder products. The Galaxy 2 series is fully backward compatible with installed Galaxy and Galant systems."

For security grade 3 applications, Honeywell has introduced the Galaxy 3 series. This series of control panels can provide up to 520 zones, and is fully backward compatible with installed Galaxy systems.

Easy launch

Bosch is launching its new Easy Series intrusion detection panels at IFSEC, designed to make security affordable and easy to install for residential and small business users. "With Easy Series, installation and set up of the panel is very simple, with no need to read manuals," Bosch says. "The small panel has colour-coded terminal strips with easy identification of each connection using easily understandable symbols. Installers can define up to eight points, and connect up to four external signalling devices and up to four control centres.

"It includes an internal power supply unit and a tamper switch. Fire detectors can also be added, allowing a complete home or small business security platform to be quickly built up. Configuration and system self-test are all voice-prompted for fast installation and can be controlled remotely via a telephone which can also be used for remote maintenance. Remote operation is extremely simple.

"To activate this panel on or off can be by means of an RFID token. To turn the system on, the token is presented to the control centre at approximately 5cm distance. Alternatively, the panel can be armed by entering a pass-code or pressing a single button. Immediately, a voice prompt will tell the current status and, at the same time, the display will be illuminated. By means of the token and voice-prompting, anyone including children can easily and reliably turn the system on and off.

"Unlike conventional keypads, the control centre uses only symbols and colour with no text. Featuring a high-contrast LCD display, the user can see at a glance whether the panel has been turned on in either the occupied or unoccupied mode. In addition, a microphone for area monitoring is integrated and five keys under the slide cover allow a pass-code to be entered for a medical or panic alarm. After an alarm transmission to a monitoring centre, Easy Series can also send an individual text or voice message to a cell phone of the owner or the neighbours."

Captivating innovation

ADE's Captiv8-256 covers eight to 32 zones as standard, but can protect up to 128 and 256 zones when used in conjunction with zone expanders MEM128 and MEM256 respectively.

Zone expanders connect to the control panel data bus and are compatible with iD Plus, EOL and RF technologies. The flexibility to expand cover from eight to 256 zones makes this panel suitable for medium to large-scale commercial applications. Features include:

  • Full UDL software. For ease of use, this is supplied to enable easy programming and subsequent fault-finding and maintenance
  • Variable partitioning. Up to 14 areas, 29 wards and 128 shunt groups are possible
  • Access control functionality. With the appropriate expansion and access controller, up to 16 doors can be controlled, with up to 500 users programmed into the system. In addition, the same key fobs used to arm/disarm the system can be used with proximity readers for access control purposes
  • Full compliance with EN Standards. Designed in accordance with EN 50131 parts 1 and 6 up to security grade 2, EN50130 part 4 EMC standards and EN 50131-5-3 for wireless devices to security grade 2.
