Installers need to take control of panels, the hub of any intruder alarm system
Four guiding principles
Pyronix has designed a range of panels based on four guiding principles. The requirements of DD243 compliance, absolute user simplicity, thorough reliability and complete flexibility have been taken into account to produce the PCX range, which consists of three models.

The PCX12, 22 and 44 are fully flexible modular systems for applications in private houses, through to high performance industrial and commercial sites. Each keypad includes an in-built proximity reader, which meets the full requirements of DD243 and offers intelligent arming when the user presents the card to the keypad.

Get set for the elderly
ADE designed the Simple Set to make alarm setting easy for the elderly and infirm. The proximity tag reader can be fitted into Optima and Accenta G3 panels, enabling users to set and unset the control panel simply by presenting a transponder tag in the shape of a keyfob close to the reader.

Simple set allows the user to operate the system without having to use the keypad. It offers a single set/unset action in line with the ACPO requirements. As well as being available for connection with newly installed G3 panels, Simple Set can also be retrofitted into existing installations and is compatible with any panel having a Keyswitch input to set and unset the system.

The reader has an LED display and audible indicator. It can support up to eight uniquely numbered keyfobs. Unlike many proximity products, it does not contain integral batteries, nor does it require batteries to operate. It has a high level of security in terms of possible code repetitiveness and is said to be more user-friendly than other keypads.

Use logic
ADE's cost-effective Logic Six alarm panel uses proximity technology in the form of a keyfob, which enables the user to set and unset the panel by presenting a keyfob to the proximity coil built into the panel.

Aimed at domestic applications, the microcontroller-based six-zone panel was designed to combat problems associated with end users and keypads, minimising potential false alarms and avoiding costly return visits by the installer to reprogramme the system.

Logic Six is compatible with all types of security devices such as PIRs, vibration detectors, panic buttons and external sounders.

For older panels
A kit from Cooper Security enables older Scantronic control panels to be upgraded easily to ensure they comply with DD243. Older panels such as the Scantronic 9600, 9610, 9800, 9800+, 808 and 816 can be upgraded quickly and efficiently, simply by modifying the existing control panel and keypad. Everything else – including all cabling and accessories – can remain in place.

The kit includes:

  • 09851 uk-55 PCB, modified to accept the 9824 eight-zone plug-on expander card

  • 9930EUR-50 ScanProx compatible keypad

  • Leads to connect the existing transformer and battery

  • Stand-off sticky pads for mounting onto older enclosures

  • Installation manuals and upgrade installation notes.

The new kit comes with all the additional benefits of the Scantronic 9851 system such as remote diagnostics (which reduces the cost of maintenance visits), local and remote up/download, radio expanders and up to four LCD keypads and 16 user codes. The kit is expandable up to 40 zones.

To install the upgrade kit, the wires to the old PCB are simply unattached, before it is unscrewed and removed. The upgrade kit PCB is then screwed onto existing mountings, and wires re-attached.

No stick-ups!
Errors are sometimes caused by the 'sticking' commonly associated with membrane keys. So CSL has designed the CS3000 keypad alarm panel with durable plastic buttons. And the keys of the stylish multi-media keypad are also backlit, to make operation easy in the dark.

With the addition of a Digi-Modem and Audio Card, it enables access to a pre-programmed helpdesk number. A two-way conversation can then take place with the ARC or engineer directly from the keypad, easing the worry of seeking assistance in the event of an accidental alarm or other technical query.

The CS3000 features sequential reporting. In the event of a break-in, it can report the path of intrusion. Using a signalling device, the panel will feed this information to the ARC, which can then pinpoint the occupied area.

For the protection of more remote areas such as outbuildings, the location can be linked to the main alarm system without the need for costly or impractical wiring, by adding an ADD32 module.

The CS3000 uses the CS3070 Digi-Modem to send signals to the ARC via the telephone line. The panel is easy to set and unset and can take up to five keypads. It is easily upgraded to dual-signalling for secure alarm transmission and meets EN50131 standards.

Four partitions
From Bosch comes the DS7240, a compact, low-cost intruder alarm system which enables complex solutions, although it is designed for private and smaller commercial properties.

The 7240 has four separate partitions, can cater for eight zones and can be optionally expanded for up to 40 zones. It can also have a fire zone, using optical smoke detectors or temperature sensors, connected to it.

The panel can be programmed locally or remotely via a telephone system after installation on site. It can accommodate up to 32 authorised users. All the controls have been ergonomically designed for ease of use. The system can also be equipped with a variety of radio sensors.

The DS7240 also has the option of four to 20 programmable relay outputs, to switch on lights or acoustic alarms. The remote control unit of the 7240 can be used to open garage doors or switch on air conditioners.

16 million codes
The Scantronic 5 Series from Cooper Security is a nine-zone wirefree alarm system, which can protect up to eight potentially vulnerable areas of a building. The ninth zone, if required, can be programmed to be operated via personal attack and remote setting devices.

The 5 Series eliminates the need for wiring between detection devices, causing minimum disruption to décor. It also has 16 million different system codes to ensure the alarm does not suffer radio interference from adjacent properties.

It can be easily operated, either from the on-board keypad on the 500r + panel, or from any of the six 525r remote setting devices or from the 524r keypad.

Flexibility to grow
The Networker TS690R is an advanced control from Menvier Security. The system provides comprehensive protection for domestic and small business premises. In contrast to its sophisticated operations, the TS690 is easy to programme. Being wirefree, it can be fitted with a minimum of wiring, mess and disruption.

But in situations where hardwiring may be an advantage, the TS690R is said to be ideal as it provides the flexibility to grow, not only via wireless detectors and remote keypads, but also using any hardwired detectors and up to four remote keypads. Up to 30 wireless plus eight hardwired zones can be monitored.

Clear cost saving
The Galaxy KeyProx combined keypad and card/tag reader was introduced by Ademco Microtech to augment and update its well-established Galaxy range. The addition of the KeyProx to the wide range of peripherals is said to provide a superior, cost-effective solution to door entry control. The card "Self Learn" provides the ability to read a wide range of proprietary encrypted and non-encrypted card types.

The need for PIN entry is removed through the provision of a simple set-unset capability in line with DD243 – allowing completion of unsetting using portable ancillary equipment (card or tag). The confirmation facility remains enabled.

The KeyProx offers a cost-effective alternative to using an extra keypad with a MicroMAX reader on a Galaxy system. And when used in conjunction with the links functionality on a Galaxy panel, the KeyProx can activate almost any feature within the panel.

Bench Tested in the July edition of Security Installer, our experts concluded: "Installation and connection to the RS485 communication bus is straightforward and should cause no problems. The KeyProx has a firm, positively-responding keypad hidden behind an aesthetically pleasing door. It represents a clear saving on the cost of separate units."
