Crimewatch UK presenter Nick Ross officially opened the London Borough of Hillingdon’s control room – in memory of former co-presenter Jill Dando, who was President of Hillingdon Crime Prevention Panel.
He commented: “CCTV has proved very successful. It has reduced the fear of crime and really does help to detect it.” He pointed out that crime is often opportunistic and CCTV deters people from taking chances.
“CCTV here in Hillingdon has also been done very sensitively so that unauthorised people such as me cannot get access to it and use video footage in TV programmes!” he added.
CCTV in the borough now covers three town centres – Hayes, Uxbridge and Ruislip – while West Drayton, Yiewsley and a heritage site named Manor Farm are currently being added to the scheme.
