While sustainability has made inroads into most areas of construction, it appears it has, as yet, failed to impact on company travel policies.

According to a survey of 300 owners and managers of SMEs, less than half (34%) of construction firms have changed their approach to business travel in response to environmental concerns. Just 7% of owners and managers take the train when possible and a mere 3% have introduced environmentally friendly policies such as car sharing and cycle-to-work schemes, compared with a national average of 18%.

The survey, conducted by Continental Research on behalf of Bibby Financial Services, also found that environmental concerns had not had any impact on their approach to business travel for two-thirds of businesses.

Meanwhile, finance companies demonstrated the highest level of environmental concern of all other industries, with 82% of owners and managers having implemented some form of environmental policy for business travel.
