A USA-style community court is to be tried out in north Liverpool, home secretary David Blunkett announced on Wednesday.
Called a "justice centre", it is described as a "one-stop, crime-busting centre, dispensing justice to perpetrators of low-level crime and disorder as well as antisocial behaviour". Leeds council was last Wednesday granted 66 antisocial behaviour orders as part of a crackdown on drug dealing on one of its housing estates.
Liverpool's pilot justice centre is expected to be the first of a number set up around the country.
It was developed by the Home Office, the Department for Constitutional Affairs and the Crown Prosecution Service. It will be paid for with £3m of government money.
The Home Office paid for the legal costs and extra police time involved in handling the cases.
