It exemplifies modern engineering, but the Shard has nothing on the pyramids of Egypt

The Shard is a wonderful piece of modern engineering “Selfridges confirms Shard architect role on revamp” (4 May, www.building.co.uk). But it is a monumental eyesore with no soul - an example of how we are allowing ourselves to become a faceless society hidden behind glass and concrete.

The blueprint has been given by the architects of time - Sir Christopher Wren, Robert Adam and Andrea Palladio to name a few. They built buildings without the monstrous bank balances thrown at the Shard, let alone the machinery employed.

It seems that some of us are held bent on eradicating the past masters in favour of sheets of glass and concrete. If the Shard is truly awesome what then of the architectural skills involved in building the pyramids of Egypt? I doubt the Shard will last as long.
