From today, in order to continue to invest in the high quality of journalism that you have come to expect, we are restricting access to online content to magazine subscribers only – or those of you who elect to take out online-only subscription

For 167 years Building has been at the centre of the construction industry, informing, instructing and entertaining its readers. By investing in teams of journalists who deliver high-quality news, comment, data and technical information, we have throughout those years maintained our pivotal role in the industry we serve.

But times change, and so do the ways companies run their businesses. All the more so when the economy turns down. Building is no exception.

Over the last few years, we have delivered more and more of our content for free on our website building.co.uk.

It now includes daily news and comment, contract information and an 80,000-article archive. With 250,000 unique users a month, we are the most read site in the sector.

Like most of the media, giving our content away free online has a cost to us, and our original premise that this would be mostly offset by web advertisers has proved incorrect. In fact the lion’s share of any income has gone to the search engines like Google.

So from today, in order to continue to invest in the high quality of journalism that you have come to expect, we are restricting access to online content to magazine subscribers only – or those of you who elect to take out online-only subscription. In the coming months we will continue to enhance both the website and the magazine. We look forward to your continued support.
