Your leader column (3 August, page 3) could not be more apt. On a Sunday morning a few weeks ago, I had to inform some scaffolders who were working on a building on a busy street corner in central London about the dangers of working on the scaffold with no safety equipment.
They were working at the top of their platform handing lengths of scaffold pipe to each other with no harnesses and no hard hats. Apart from the scaffold itself, which had some tape attached, there was no restriction on pedestrians passing close to or directly underneath the operation. No supervision and absolutely no sense of responsibility …
