Having been a member of the RICS for more than 50 years, I read with interest your leader on 20 November (page 3)

The general dissatisfaction of many members began with the demolition of the skill divisions and branch structure. For many years I was a member of the committee of the QS division of the Greater Manchester branch. The committee organised meetings each month, except in the summer and held an annual dinner. Members got together at the meetings and met other members and discussed ideas. All the work in the branches was undertaken by members of the committees and their colleagues.

We now have vast regions with RICS regional offices to offer what the branch members did out of pride in their profession. Full-time employees of the RICS are now in control and as a result the members do not feel part of the RICS. The family atmosphere that the branch and divisional structure encouraged has now gone.

I would take issue with you where you say that proposals to set up an alternative have floundered. The QSi is now doing well.
