I criticised the RICS for years and wrote several times seeking changes in favour of its members, particularly a review of its budget so that the annual subscription fees could be reduced.

I got nowhere and resigned in protest … and received an argumentative and patronising response, which I treated with the contempt it deserved. The RICS lost its way years ago. Martin Bishop's letter (11 July, page 35) is interesting but his aim is off. It seems he thinks the RICS’ customers are clients. That is not (or should not) be correct – the RICS’ customers are its members. When it realises that, then it may start to make sensible progress in setting its objectives and restructuring effectively.
