Well, what a surprise – the unfortunate people living in flats separated by lightweight floors at Greenwich Millennium Village can hear their neighbours!

Your feature on noise transmission at Greenwich (6 May, page 26) very simply illustrates why lightweight floors do not provide buyers of flats with the privacy and reliability they expect. We agree entirely with Professor Robin McKenzie when he says: “We recommended to our clients that a different form of construction be used.”

Heavyweight precast concrete floors are not only natural sound deadeners but also keep heating bills down, will not go up in smoke if subjected to fire, and they don’t squeak.

If you want your clients and home buyers to feel reassured on all these points, don’t go lightweight – bring on the heavyweights.
