The idea of improving the existing housing stock has been debated and analysed for many years now, especially in the information, advice and guidance for Part L (15 May, page 9)

If we are to improve on carbon reduction in the UK, the importance of existing stock is massively higher than the 250,000 houses we need to build in the UK each year.

The only time to get buy-in from homeowners is when they are focused on improving their homes, that is, when they are building extensions, conservatories and so on. I personally would want to make “consequential improvements” to the rest of my home. For those who would not want to increase their budget or improve their carbon footprint, think about the future house that you buy from the person that had accepted and embraced this global issue. Wouldn’t that be a nice house to buy?
