The new nine-storey structure will replace the former Austral House building. Construction is due to finish in January 2007.
The first stage of the project, worth £1.66m, involves the installation of 800mm diameter piles to depths of up to 33m, for a load bearing secant wall. It is scheduled for completion in early Autumn.
October will see the second phase of the project start. This will involve 1,500 and 1,800mm diameter bearing piles to depths of up to 34m being constructed from within the excavated basement.
Foundation specialist Stent, a subsidiary of Balfour Beatty Group, is designing and constructing the piling.
