VIn response to growing concerns regarding water shortages, a Water Savings Group has been set up by Defra to bring the key players together and identify and implement solutions.

On Friday 20 October, CIBSE, supported by the Society of Public Health Engineers, held the first part of a Water Series, entitled “Water - conservation and re-use for engineers”, which was well-attended and outlined the realities of reclaimed water system design and demand management techniques. Nicky Gavron, deputy mayor of London, gave a keynote address about the Water Action Plan.

Part 1 of the series was chaired by Jacob Tompkins, chief executive of Waterwise, and speakers for Part 1 included Peter Jiggins of Defra, Reginald Brown of BSRIA, Steff Wright of Gusto Construction (UK Rainwater Association), Lutz Johnen of Aquality Trading and Consulting (also UK Rainwater Association) and Dr Christian Wilhlem of Geoterra in Germany.

Part 2 took place on Thursday 16 November, entitled “Water conservation - Designing to save water”. The event was chaired by Martin Shouler of Arup and chairman of SoPHE, and speakers included independent consultant John Love, Professor John Swaffield of Heriot-Watt University, Dr Darren Woolf of Arup and Dr Scott Arthur, also of Heriot-Watt University.

Delegates received a complimentary copy of the CIBSE Knowledge Series publication Reclaimed Water, which provides an overview of rainwater and grey water reclamation systems, covering legal requirements, system types, design considerations and system operation requirements.
