Two health and social services trusts in Northern Ireland have adopted mini combined heat and power (chp) technology.

The policy is part of Northern Ireland Electricity’s initiative: Sustainable Management of Assets and Renewable Technology (SMART).

John Brolly from Causeway Trust commented: “It is hoped that the installation will raise awareness of sustainable forms of energy in the area, as well as bringing benefits to the environment and the trusts involved through heat recovery, reduced emissions and lower fuel bills.”

The UK government is encouraging greater use of sustainable heating and power technologies with a £16 million grant allocation. This is the largest ever funding round awarded for projects of this kind to date. As well as chp, the government also wants to see more community heating, where a single heat network supplies more than one building.
