One size does not fit all, especially for chemical drainage, says Des Dolan
Safe and reliable drainage of waste chemicals from laboratories and research facilities is vital, yet not all plastic systems are suitable.
Amorphous polymers, including PVC-U, PVC-C and ABS can be softened by non-ionic detergents and may crack. Purpose-designed chemical drainage systems made from crystalline polymer materials, such as the Vulcathene system, offer high resistance and cannot be compromised.
There is no specific British or CEN Standard for the performance of a chemical waste drainage system, and standards relating to domestic waste are not valid.
Specifiers and contractors should look for systems that can offer assurances in the form of independent testing and approvals by bodies such as the BBA.
