The Work and Families Act 2006 has altered maternity and caring rights:

  • From 1 October 2006, statutory maternity pay was increased from 26 weeks to 39 weeks, for those with babies due after 1 April 2007;
  • these women are also entitled to 26 weeks additional leave on top of their maternity leave;
  • women will be able to go into work for up to ten days without losing their maternity pay;
  • statutory adoption leave will be extended from 26 to 39 weeks for adoptions after 1 April 2007;
from 6 April 2007, flexible working rights will be extended to carers of adults as well as parents of children under six and disabled children;

from 1 October 2006 maternity pay, paternity pay and adoption pay was calculated on a daily rather than weekly basis.
