ChandlerKBS is beginning a key phase of work for British Nuclear Group (BNG) at a former power station in Snowdonia national park, Wales.

Trawsfynydd comprises twin shutdown and de-fuelled reactors, which are due to be fully decommissioned by 2012.

ChandlerKBS is advising on the construction of a safe storage facility, the intermediate level waste (ILW) store, a crucial step in the clean-up programme. Nuclear waste from the plant will be stored here until a national repository becomes available. BNG is spending a total of £8.8m on new construction work this financial year, a large chunk of which appears to be funding the ILW.

ChandlerKBS is providing a range of services to the 15.4 ha decommissioning site, including advice on procurement, budget and programme management. The consultancy expects its role to at the site to continue until 2010. The work at Trawsfynydd comes under the £56bn national decommissioning programme, which is to last between 50 and 75 years.

This month BNG's parent British Nuclear Fuels sold its US operation Westing House to Toshiba. The move has fuelled speculation that it will also sell BNG.

Last month contractor Amec announced it was teaming up with the UK Atomic Energy Authority and US nuclear specialist CH2M Hill. Meanwhile the UK's biggest nuclear facility Sellafield is radically restructuring its project controls arrangements, as revealed in QS News last week.
