In "Feeling a little stressed?" (12 September, page 30), lawyer Mark London suggests that if you're stressed at work, you should talk to your line manager rather than an external coaching or counselling service.
That's all well and good if your line manager is willing and able to listen to you and is not the cause of your stress. But too often, managers are promoted because of their technical expertise, with little thought given to their people skills.
Coaching can help managers move away from the "boss" approach to management and improve their interpersonal skills to be more effective and productive within their organisations. Through coaching, managers can learn a new, supportive, collaborative leadership style that builds trust within the workplace.
