The Carbon Trust has invested £1 million in fuel cell developer Ceres Power.
The Trust views this as a way to 'advance the much broader emerging hydrogen industry in the UK'.

Ceres Power, which raised another £4 million in private equity, makes fuel cell products for distributed power generation. Its potential markets include the UK domestic boiler market and generators for secure power supply.

The company is an offshoot from Imperial College London. It will focus on the commercial exploitation of a fuel cell invented by the founders at the college.

This fuel cell uses a unique steel-supported design, rather than traditional approaches based on ceramic or plastic. It is therefore a better, lower-cost option for the domestic market. The fuel cell can operate on hydrogen and existing hydrocarbon fuels.
