The National Construction College (NCC) is urging companies to show their support for apprenticeships by sponsoring one of the college’s four awards ceremonies.

Last year nearly 60 students won awards at the events in the South, East, Midlands and Scotland. Former world champion boxer Barry McGuigan will be the guest speaker at all the ceremonies.

Roofer David Hayden (pictured left), of Knightsbridge Property Services, trained at the NCC’s South campus in Erith, Kent, and was awarded Top Second Year Built Up Felt Roofing Apprentice as well as Apprentice of the Year in 2007. ‘I think the NCC has got the balance of classroom learning and on-site practical learning spot on,’ says Hayden, who has followed his father and grandfather into the roofing trade. ‘You can be practising the theory you learn in the classroom the very next day, so you don’t have time to forget.’
