11:50AM Danish architect appointed for National Maritime Museum scheme

C. F. Møller Architects is to create a worldwide learning archive in the heart of the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich, London. The Danish architect firm is working with Adams Kara Taylor as structural engineers and Fulcrum as services engineers on the scheme.

C. F. Møller was chosen from a final shortlist of four that included Hopkins, Kohn Petersen Fox and Studio Downie.

Firm partner and in charge of the scheme Anna Maria Indrio, said: "One of the reasons why we were chosen is our experience with the Darwin Centre Phase Two project at the Natural History Museum, as well as our clear views on the possibilities for the future of the National Maritime Museum, with reference to our Scandinavian approach to architecture”.

The firm will design new facilities for on-site storage, learning spaces for schools, students, community groups and general visitors, research workstations for academic, technical, commercial and individual researchers.

There will be a new café and new space for exhibitions, enabling rotation of existing galleries and facilitating the creation of a Special Exhibitions Gallery. The project also aims to improve the visitor experience, orientation and flow through the entire National Maritime Museum’s site.

Construction is expected to start in 2009 with completion in 2011.
