Period tile maker Craven Dunnill Jackfield has supplied tiles for the floor of Cathedral Church of St Mary’s in Newcastle upon Tyne. The company said it was the biggest project it had ever worked on. It supplied 11,835 handmade encaustic tiles and 36,862 hand-cut geometric tiles in a total of 70 different designs. The floor replaced tiles that were installed in the early 20th century over a screed and compacted earth floor that had become damaged beyond repair. Unusually, new designs were used rather than copying the original tiles. The designs were taken from the firm’s archive catalogue and are in the style of Pugin, which was considered to be more in keeping with the original building.
