This year’s winners take a smart approach to densification that shows how to provide quality living space in constrained sites

Last year was a landmark for the Housing Design Awards as they celebrated their 70th anniversary. Will this year’s winners make for an equally momentous event? According to David Birkbeck, chief executive of housing lobbyists and awards organisers Design for Homes, transformation is taking place. A change in style was noted by judges that could spell the beginning of the end of a traditional British residential template that has been in use since the end of the First World War. 

“We could be seeing the end of the traditional two-storey terrace house with a front and back garden. The terrace house is on its way out and the courtyard house is on its way in,” Birkbeck says.
