Vinci built the new Bishop Justus secondary school in Bromley to a high environmental spec

The school has 1,188 pupils and comprises a mix of single, two and three-storey sections. The project also encompasses the construction of new playing fields and sporting facilities. The scheme included enabling works for the installation of temporary classrooms.

Key points

• Environment: the project won the London Borough of Bromley ‘Contribution to Sustainable Design and Construction’ award. A key feature of the design is the inclusion of planted ‘green roofs’ which have positive effects on the environment
• Construction: the school features a steel frame, pre-cast concrete floors, brick and render cladding constructed on piled foundations.
• Phased handover: the project tool a number of phases over a 91 week period with pupils occupying part of the school from week 66
• Community involvement: the contractor covered the cost of the work for the chapel adjacent to the school.
