Green construction costs are over estimated by up to 300%, creating misgivings and major barriers to environmentally conscious construction. This is the findings of a new study by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

Some 1400 respondents to the global survey estimated the additional cost of building green at 17% above conventional construction; this is more than triple the true cost of about 5%. Conversely, those questioned put greenhouse gas emissions by buildings at 19% of world total, when the actual figure is around 40%.

The study highlights opportunities to promote green building know-how and technologies.

The WBCSD Energy Efficiency in Buildings project is a three year initiative to assess the environmental impact of buildings and develop means to achieve zero net energy use for residential and commercial buildings.
