The government has outlined plans to take legal action against contractors that fail to install energy efficiency measures in line with the Building Regulations by increasing the time limit under which they can be prosecuted.

The Department of Communities and Local Government has announced a consultation to extend the time frame in which local authority building control can bring a prosecution. Under the changes the government will increase the time limit from six months to two years. The move follows concerns that a longer period is needed before construction defects become apparent.

Ian Wright, Minister at DCLG, said: “A more efficient enforcement regime should prove to be a more effective deterrent to non-compliance, ensuring that unscrupulous and lazy builders cannot benefit at the expense of the law-abiding majority”.
