Aircrete blocks

Blockmaker H+H Celcon has appointed Hart Construction of Colchester a recommended contractor for its Ra House, its fast masonry construction concept. The Ra house combines Celcon aircrete blocks with the thin-joint system, engineered flooring systems and proprietary roofs, with options for the company’s foundation blocks and flooring system at ground floor. Hart Construction has already completed a thin-joint project in Bermondsey, south London and is about to begin work on two more Ra house projects in the capital.

Launch of brick ranges

Baggeridge has launched four brick ranges. The Ochil Greystone Smooth has smooth arises and is aimed at the architectural market. The Trinity Cream Gilt Stock is a cream textured brick, and also comes in a Multi version, with the same base colour with dark smoked areas. Both are aimed at the housing sector. The Light Russet Sovereign Stock is a blend of pale reds and has a soft texture as a result of its water struck manufacturing process. The brick is suited to brownfield sites, as it fits into settings with more mature brickwork.

Insulated brick cladding

Insulated brick cladding

A 200- year-old Yorkshire cottage has been reclad using Eurobrick’s insulated brick cladding system. The company's Classic cladding range was specified in a mix of Pastorale, Old English and Baroque blends. To install the system: first, the existing structure was clad in insulated backing panels, mechanically fixed by panel fasteners to the substrate. Brick slips were bonded to the panel by adhesive, each slip being located in the vacuum formed channels. Finally dry pack mortar was applied.

Sandtoft has supplied 5,428 m² of its large format Cassius Clayslate for a Bett Homes scheme to regenerate the Oatlands area of Glasgow. Comprising 1,300 homes, the Oatlands scheme is designed to reflect surrounding Scottish architecture in a modern form. Bett Homes initially thought clay would be too expensive for a scheme on this scale, but with 10.5 tiles per square metre and the same installation techniques as for concrete tiles, the product proved cost-effective.

Off-site technology

Remember the Hanson House at the 2005 BRE Offsite show? It was a key exhibit, showcasing many of the company’s innovations in off-site technology, including prefabricated cavity wall systems, Jetfloor flooring, Thermalite thin-joint blockwork, Wonderwall composite panels, and E E much more. Since then, it has been used to train Hanson staff, demonstrate the technology to the housebuilding industry, and its innovations are being used in projects across the country. For example, social housing in Swansea is being re-clad using the Wonderwall system.

Retaining wall blocks

A housing development at Burntisland near Edinburgh is the first UK site to use Anchor Wall Systems’ Landmark segmental retaining wall blocks. Developer Stewart Milne Homes is building 100 homes on the site. Terraces up to 6m high had to be provided to facilitate build on the site, and one wall was required within 9m of a main highway. Landmark has British Board of Agrément certification, and its two key components are concrete facing blocks and polymeric geogrids that are locked together.

Lightweight steel roofing

Lightweight steel roofing supplier Metrotile, has supplied its Metro Slate for a 32-home scheme by the Orkney Housing Association. The specification for the timber-frame homes called for a material that would be extremely durable, and sympathetic to the local environment. The product was selected to recreate the attractive irregular riven appearance of a traditional slate roof. Metro Slate is manufactured from high-grade steel and protected by an Aluzinc coating – combining zinc and aluminium.
