BRE has released a prototype of the software the ODPM intends to make available for demonstrating compliance with the new Part L2 of the Building Regulations.
The tool can also be used in meeting the requirements of the forthcoming Energy Performance of Buildings Directive.
The simplified building energy model calculates the monthly energy use and carbon dioxide emissions of a property based on a description of the building’s geometry, construction, use, heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and lighting loads. As well as being used to demonstrate compliance with the minimum performance standards set by Part L, it can also be used to produce an asset rating (the amount of energy the building uses) in accordance with the EPBD.
The SBEM, plus the interface and fledgling databases, is still far from complete, but BRE and the ODPM are looking for feedback on the functionality of the tool and suggestions for improvement.
