The Engineering and Technology Board has condemned current training for technicians as 'outmoded and not fit for purpose'.
The ETB warns that employers must improve standards or risk a fall in its productivity levels overall.

In its report, Developing technicians in the workforce, the ETB concludes that employers are not making the changes necessary to ensure that technicians have the right skills to improve productivity in businesses and across UK industry as a whole.

Key recommendations in the ETB report include: local training strategies involving employers in their communities; more information on training available locally; promotion of e-learning.

Alan Clark, chief executive of the ETB says: "The science, engineering and technology sectors are crying out for technicians and their skills. Their skills are in high demand and this report should serve as notice to employers to invest in their skills and training."
