Foster and Partners has unveiled a spaceship-like design for a new performing arts centre for Scotland.

The building will form part of Glasgow’s Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre. Gardiner & Theobald is the QS and Turner & Townsend is the PM.

The structure is located in the new Queen’s Dock (QD2) development. The most striking part of its design, the roof of the auditorium, will span some 120m in a shallow dome of diagonally latticed steel work.

The auditorium will seat 12,500 people and feature a range of fixed, retractable and moveable seating. The idea is to create a flexible venue capable of hosting a variety of events, from pop concerts to theatre.
