The building industry is back in the dramatic spotlight with Goldplated, a new TV series that takes a pot shot at the nouveau riche lifestyles of the “Cheshire Set” with millionaire construction boss, John White, at the centre of events.

In the first two episodes of the eight-part series, contractor White has already defied a planning order and demolished a listed facade on a development site that was holding up his works, (ejecting an illegal immigrant worker from the seat of a JCB to do the job himself); blackmailed his son into remortgaging his house to ease his company’s cash flow problems; and started to schmooze his ex-wife who holds 50 per cent of his company’s assets.
