Deister electronic UK, which is at the forefront of the RFID technology being used by councils to identify wheelie bins to occupiers, has totally rejected the "bugging" claims being made in some of the national media.
Darren Harrold, sales and marketing director, said although the parent company in Germany manufactures the BiTech RFID waste management system, none of the UK systems they were involved in identified specific types of garbage "so any claims about 'bugging' domestic waste are utterly groundless".
He said bin tagging using RFID had been in use for more than 15 years and there were more than two million tagged in the UK.
"Bin tags cannot in any way monitor and electronically transmit the contents of a bin."
Working with vehicle mounted readers the tags can provide data about the type of garbage collected (green or landfill), comparison of the time taken to complete rounds and identify the volume of garbage collected to individuals.
