The British Approvals Service for Cables (BASEC) is warning specifiers and installers not to be distracted by the 17th Edition of the Wiring Regulations and to ensure cable compliance for every installation.

Installers will need to get to grips with the new regulations and their implications quickly.

“What we don’t want while this is happening is installers taking their eye off the ball and falling foul of some of the non-compliant and faulty cable products,” said BASEC chief executive Dr Jeremy Hodge.

BASEC recommends six safeguards:

Get the specification right;

  • Instruct your procurement department to buy BASEC-approved cable;
  • Do not strip out suspect cable immediately – seek advice first;
  • Contact your trade body on design and installation or BASEC on cable quality issues;
  • Keep records of your purchases;
  • If you have scrap lengths of faulty cable, send them to BASEC for testing.
