The 1249 Regeneration Partnership has appointed Tropus to project manage its £180m Barnsley Markets development.
The shopping, leisure and residential project hopes to transform Barnsley into a dynamic market town. Designed by architects CZWG and Holder Mathias, the original concept was based on a kasbah (a traditional North African market) with an indoor market area on three interlinked levels and a covered external market area. With a multi screen cinema, bowling centre and a large amphitheatre, the external market will also act as an entertainment venue outside shopping hours. There are also plans for a 100 apartment residential complex and a new 1,200-space multi story car park. This is the largest single project within Barnsley's strategic development framework. Construction will begin in Spring 2008 and the team aim to have the shopping centre up and running by Spring 2011.
