3:05AM Firm aims to build up 100-strong regional team in the next year

The project management arm of major contractor Balfour Beatty has set up shop in the Northeast and aims to establish a 100-strong office there within a year.

Balfour Beatty Management has opened an office in Wynyard Park in the Tees Valley which currently employs 18 staff. The office will cover the region from the Scottish border to the Humber and will initially serve the petrochemical and pharmaceutical sectors.

Director Ian Basford said: "There is significant investment in industry in the Northeast and it is the right time to establish a presence here. The skills, capabilities and resources exist historically in the region so people are already here to develop the younger generation. "We will be recruiting project managers, quantity surveyors, planners, engineers and a range of technical consultants in order to offer management, advice and support to a wide range of construction projects.

"There is an extremely bright future for construction in the industrial sector in this region. Organisations such as One NorthEast, the North East Process Industry Cluster (NEPIC) and the Tees Valley Engineering Partnership (TVEP) are actively attracting inward investment."
