Gaining quality management standard ISO9001 and Investors in People has helped North West firm Conlon Construction treble its turnover to £24m in five years.

Conlon typically carries out 15 contracts a year in the public and private sectors. Adding these qualifications has meant that it can go for bigger contracts. ‘It has helped us to grow our turnover because you have got to have these qualifications to work for certain clients,’ says chairman and MD, Theresa Noblett (pictured).

Conlon, which employs 115 people, gained ISO9001 in 2002 and Investors in People in 2003. These standards need maintenance, however, requiring assessments twice a year and once a year respectively. Conlon uses Centre for Assessment to carry out both. ‘We thought it was good that the same assessor can cover both areas and knows our business,’ says Noblett. ‘Centre for Assessment can carry out ISO14001 [environmental management] assessments too which is the next thing we are working towards.’
