The Baltimore Aircoil Trillium series of adiabatic coolers and condensers is a technological advance for small and mid-size air-conditioning and refrigeration systems, says maker BAC.

The unit can be operated either adiabatically or totally dry. When the cooler is in adiabatic mode, a small flow of water is used to cool the incoming air. Some of this water evaporates, and the remainder goes to drain or into a water-reclamation process.

The pre-cooling evaporative pads have a flute-angle design that achieves up to 80% humidification efficiency or 6 to 8 K depression of the ambient air temperature.

A controls package matches the cooling capacity to the load by varying fan speed in dry mode. Pre-cooling kicks in when required.

Other features of the controls package include the means to allow only one period of pre-cooling per day to eliminate stopping and starting of the water flow, which could lead to scaling. The controller also switches between sides to ensure each bank of pads receives the same pre-cooling hours.
