Axis Communications has celebrated 10 years since the company introduced the world's first network camera.

In October 1996 the Axis 200 network camera was launched and was one of the first steps in the technology shift from analogue CCTV to network video. Equipped with a built-in web server, the new network camera enabled access to its pictures from any web browser in the world.

Ray Mauritsson, Axis Communications president, said: "Early adopters of the Axis 200 mainly used it for their web sites but it only took a few years until the benefits with security installations became evident. Since then, network cameras have become an increasingly important feature within professional security installations."
