Brighouse Yorkshire-based Avocet Hardware Ltd is helping to fund the protection of a flock of Avocets breeding at a location near Southend in Essex.
Local newspapers have reported the disappearance of Avocet eggs shortly before hatching for the past two years but this year the Essex Wildlife Trust were determined to prevent the theft from happening again. The hardware company’s namesake – a coastal wader that has distinctive black and white plumage and a long curved beak – is a protected species and it is an offence to take, damage or destroy its nest, eggs or young. Violation of this law can result in heavy fines or imprisonment.
‘How could we not do something to protect the beautiful birds from which we derive our name?’ said Stephanie Wright of Avocet Hardware.
