Aspire Housing has won a £200,000, three-year contract to manage Newcastle council’s homelessness service and housing waiting list.

The service, launched on Wednesday under the name Newcastle Housing Advice, will become the first port of call for people facing homelessness.

Aspire has provided the service on behalf of Newcastle council for the past four years, but this is the first time the contract has been officially let.

Council leader David Leech said: “I am confident the new contract with Aspire Housing will ensure the service continues to improve. It includes a simplified system for getting people onto the housing register.”

Maureen Harkin, director of operations at Aspire Housing, said: “We have worked hard over the past years to ensure that we provide quality advice and support and we are looking forward to developing the service.”

Aspire Housing was formed in February 2000 after the transfer of Newcastle council’s stock.
