A former electrician who was exposed to asbestos while carrying out his job has won £47 000 in damages from his former employer.
Michael Deegan brought the claim against Central Electrical Installations of Bristol; he worked with the firm between 1955-71.
During his time at the company Deegan worked on numerous premises in the Bristol area. He regularly carrying out tasks in boiler houses where laggers were pouring and mixing asbestos with water to lag pipes. He has since developed asbestosis, pleural thickening and pleural plaques.
Deegan’s lawyer, Brigitte Chandler, an industrial disease specialist with Charles Lucas & Marshall said: “The claim reflects the considerable pain that Mr Deegan has had to endure as a result of the asbestos exposure.”
Many electricians have been unwittingly exposed to asbestos and doctors anticipate that instances of asbestosis will rise considerably in the future, with electricians among the professions particularly at risk.
