"The modern agenda of architecture is fundamentally flawed. We need to address problems such as low thermal mass, and the fact that buildings heat up too quickly. We have abused the discipline of environmental service design; we should design these things out."
Hyett said that the whole construction and development industry must be reorientated to a 'culture of sustainability.
He proposed a three-pronged approach: education of the next generation of construction professionals; re-education of the current practitioners; and collaboration along the whole supply chain. "Everyone must be signed up, from the supplier to the facilities manager," he said.
He stressed the importance of winning over the public. "These things cannot be achieved by code or legislation. We live in a market economy. The consumer must be educated to demand a new generation of buildings."
Hyett also commented that construction professionals should be obliged to keep up to date with the latest sustainable techniques. "CPD should be more focused on a sustainable agenda."
