M&E workers union Amicus has started the process of merging with the Transport and General Workers’ Union (T&G) to create Unite, Britain’s biggest trade union with a membership of 2.1 million.

Unite has already set in motion plans that could lead to a further merger with the United Steelworkers Union (USW). The USW represents 850 000 workers in the USA, Canada and the Caribbean, throughout the steel, glass and manufacturing sectors.

The integration with the T&G will not be completed until November of next year. There will be job losses but no compulsory redundancies, say the unions. Amicus was formed in 2002 from the merger of the AEEU and MSF unions.
