An online poll of 335 construction professionals by the CIOB has revealed that 41% believe corruption in the UK construction industry to be widespread, 37% believe it to be occasional and only 18% believe it is rare.
CIOB chief executive Chris Blythe said: “Bribery in relation to the award of contracts is the most visible form of corruption, notably when contracts are for major works. However, corrupt practices can be found at each phase of a construction project; during planning and design, in the award of contracts, during the construction process, and during the operation and maintenance of projects after construction is finished.”
Last month the CIOB signed up to the Anti-Corruption Forum, led by Transparency International. The forum is an alliance of professional institutions, business associations and companies from the construction, infrastructure and engineering sectors.
The CIOB is planning further research later in the year into the costs and causes of corruption.
