Here we provide a round up of the latest in the competitive world of access control products
IFSEC boost for XQT
BPT Security System says there has been a huge surge in sales of its Impro ZQT/903 radio frequency transmitters following IFSEC 2005.
The Impro XQT Quad Transmitter is a four-channel handheld UHF transmitter as well as a passive key ring shape transponder tag, designed to work with the Impro access control systems. In the months since IFSEC, BPT says it has sold more than quadruple the amount sold over the previous year and a half when the product was launched.
The Impro XQT features four buttons, used to transmit a different channel ID code, together with the transmitter's ID, to the receiver. The receiver can be connected to an access control system such as the IXP121, 200 or 400. The four channels can be used to activate different devices in the system, such as doors, barriers etc. BPT says the design makes Impro XQT highly practical for combined pedestrian and vehicular access control, using just the one tag.

On the button
Multilink Access Control Systems has launched a new range of vandal-resistant glass ceramic piezo buttons which react to even the slightest touch.
The buttons, which are usually used in 'request to exit' applications, include a 12v DC bi-colour LED, which powers from the host system. Usually, red is used as standby and green as pass. The LED does not require a ballast resistor.
Originally designed for Multilink's Toplock control system, the PZ range of buttons will function with any suitable host system and any application where robust, vandal-resistant buttons are required. They come with a choice of mounting plates, in white plastic, satin stainless steel or grey powder finish metal.
Multilink believes the buttons are ideal for use in applications where an ordinary button might be vulnerable to misuse or where minimum pressure needs to be exerted to open a door.

Lock and load
Codelocks has released the Codelocks 5000 Electronic, an electronic lock designed for commercial buildings, schools and hospitals.
The company says it allows greater flexibility and security combined with all the advantages of existing electronic locks.
"The difference is it uses a Piezo actuator, developed by Piezo-specialist company Servocell, for the first time in a stand-alone electronic lock and provides battery life of over 500,000 operations," Codelocks says. "This is approximately 10 times more than a typical electronic push button lock. The reason for this increase is the low power consumption. The new Piezo latch mechanism requires 66 times less power than a solenoid-driven clutch mechanism.
"With this new technology locks can be powered over an existing Ethernet network or telephone cable, which significantly lowers the installation costs."

New range launched
Tunstall has launched a new and enhanced range of door entry and access control solutions to provide increased security and protection for buildings and residents.
Tunstall's range can be used for single or multiple door sites, and are suitable for small retirement developments to centrally-managed multiple office complexes and tower blocks with over 1000 dwellings. the company says solutions can be tailor-made to work with specific doors, to include timing restrictions and to link in with CCTV systems.
The Identifone 200 and 250 offer audio door entry for secure caller verification, and are designed for developments with less than 20 dwellings. The Identifone 250 offers video verification and secrecy of speech.
The Concierge 300 has digital keypads and speech messages to give callers information on the progress of their call, and is suitable for larger complexes.
The Concierge 2 is a digital solution specifically for tower blocks and multi-dwelling complexes. Access is controlled and monitored by automatically transferring all door entry calls to the concierge or caretaker, who have a database of who is allowed access.

Electro lock
Waferlock has introduced a new electromechanical master key system, the Euro Profile Cylinder.
It can be instantly reprogrammed should an original key be lost or stolen, or after a change in personnel. New keys are quickly able to be programmed using the master key. Any redundant keys can also be re-programme and re-issued as each key has a unique 64 bit encrypted code.
The cylinder also has an audible alarm should anyone try to pick the lock or attempt to gain entry with the wrong key. The cylinder will retrofit almost all Euro key+turn cylinders and is available in lengths up to 120mm.
Power source is via three LRI batteries housed within the inner turn knob. Battery life is two years under normal use or 30,000 cycles.
Typical applications include serviced apartments and offices, high street shops and offices, holiday let and buy-to-let properties, as well as residential apartments.

Fingerprint access
Norbain has extended its biometric range of products with the addition of the TocaAccess light range of fingerprint readers from TriFusion. It is a standalone fingerprint reader that has been developed for domestic users and small to medium sized companies.
The TocaAccess light stores 99 fingerprints and can be used outdoors and indoors. It consists of a control panel used to enroll and delete users and a scanner unit used to scan the finger and encode it.
The product is available in three models, depending on how many dry contact relays are required. The contact relays may be connected to any electrical device such as a digital cylinder, electric strike, electro magnet or alarm.
To use the device, the authorised user simply swipes their finger on the scanner. Provided that the finger has been registered in the system the door will open automatically. TriFusion says it is ideal for domestic use and company locations with up to 99 users.

Providing AIR space
Hisec International is now offering an improved Access Image Recognition module, or AIR, that provides more enhanced security options. The company says that "used with the Access Intrusion Management System, the AIR provides a higher level of security than a card, card with PIN or biometric reader".
When a card is swiped, a nearby camera records an image of the person requesting access. A photo of the cardholder, as well as a live image from the camera flashes on screen for security staff to review. If the images match, the security staff manually grants access.
"This prevents people from using incorrect cards, allowing multiple people to enter, and makes security staff accountable for access control," Hisec says.
Users can program the AIR for automatic operation, which allows a PC to grant or deny access. This means that a security operator cannot grant access by clicking a button each time a cardholder uses their card, but the AIR module operator will grant access after an adjustable time, giving the guard time to deny automatic access if they choose.

Entry level system
Multilink Access Control Systems has launched a new entry level access control system that costs just £190. The company says the Multipass system is ideal for small installations, parking control, private buildings, camp sites and small hotels.
"It is quick to install and simple to use and can connect two readers that work with any card technology," Multilink says. "The system is capable of storing up to 2000 users and 1000 time-stamped transactions, and can be upgraded by a simple change of microchip at any time in future."
The system is compatible with any card technology – magnetic, Wiegand, Proximity, touch, barcode or radio, which are configured by onboard switches. It can control one door in two directions or two different doors, monitoring when a door is forced or left open too long and raising an alarm. Reports of the last 1000 transactions can be printed at any time.
