The scientific team that developed Pilkington ActivTM, the world's first, dual action, self-cleaning glass, recently attended a top engineering awards dinner hosted by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, after being selected as one of four finalists.

Presented each year by the Royal Academy of Engineering, The MacRobert Award recognises the successful development of innovative ideas in engineering. It seeks to demonstrate the importance of engineering and the role of engineers and scientists in contributing to national prosperity and international prestige. The winning Award is honoured with a gold medal and the team members with a prize of £50,000.

Despite not picking up the first prize, the Pilkington team, led by Dr Kevin Sanderson and including Tim McKittrick, Simon Hurst, David Rimmer and L.Ye, were favoured by many to take the winning accolade. Indeed, Pilkington ActivTM caught the attention of the national press following the announcement of the finalists, with excellent coverage that included the BBC and Daily Mail!

In addition to being presented with a certificate to mark their achievement Kevin and other members of the team had the honour of explaining the concept of Pilkington ActivTM to the Duke of Edinburgh, who took a keen interest in the product. ‘This has been a marvellous honour for all of us that worked on the development of the product,’ said Kevin after the event. ‘For this award Pilkington ActivTM has been judged by some of the best engineering minds around today, so this is true recognition by our peers of what we have achieved.’
