Abloy holds the keys to power

For utility buildings, keeping unauthorised access to a minimum is important if security is to be maintained. For William Cleary – the technical services manager responsible for security at Ardnacrusha Hydro-Electric Power Station just outside Limerick in County Clare – that presents something of a conundrum, as different teams of employees also need to be able to work in various areas of the site at different times and not be hindered.

Two years ago, security at the power plant was upgraded when mortice, rim and padlocks were brought under a single master key set-up. Previously, only the station’s office block was secured using the Abloy DiskLock pro cylinder mechanism. However, the system’s inherent flexibility convinced Cleary to extend and enhance the system site-wide.

Over 120 doors and gates covering 30 general areas have now been fitted with Abloy’s 4190 automatic deadlocking mortice locks and DiskLock Pro cylinders. “The specified system allows staff access to certain areas like outhouses and workshops, but prohibits unauthorised personnel and members of the general public from gaining entry,” added Cleary.

Previously, there was no control over who could cut keys. There were many unauthorised keys floating around, but no-one really knew how many. Anyone could pick up a set of keys and make some copies. Now, if replacement keys are needed the security team must go back to the original supplier and provide proof of identity.
