Benedictine monks in County Limerick, Ireland are reaping the benefits of geothermal energy, with a new heating system designed and installed by specialist firm Dunstar.

The community at Glenstal Abbey manage a boarding school, dairy farm and guest house. Buildings added during a recent refurbishment meant the existing heating system was insufficient. To maintain the tranquillity of the monastery a heat pump was suggested.

"The church and library, which is right next door to the plantroom, are in constant use for prayer and study; it was essential that the operation of York's heat pump would not disrupt these activities," explained Father Finton Lyons.

York's YCSE 60 heat pump was specified for use in a system that uses water from a lake in the grounds as the heat source. The system raises the heating circuit temperature to 50ºC to feed radiators on site.
