The health and safety executive (HSE) has joined forces with the Royal & Sun Alliance to develop its 'Essentials of Health and Safety Routemap', a software package designed to help small businesses improve their awareness.
By using simple question and answer techniques, the software package can be used to produce health and safety reports, enabling employers to identify specific areas for improvement. It then takes the end user through a process of preparing his or her own health and safety policy and risk assessment.

The risk assessment form is divided into three sections, so that security managers can: list any significant hazards, identify those who may be harmed in any way and note down existing 'controls' for risks. This should help you, the security manager, to provide the evidence you'll need in the Boardroom to back up the assertion that you are indeed managing the company's health and safety effectively.

Although the Routemap is primarily aimed at small-to-medium-sized businesses, the HSE anticipates that the software will also be helpful in providing in-house risk teams and large multinationals with what is ultimately a very adaptable health and safety training tool.
